Kenaston Soil Moisture Mesonet
2010-01-11
revision
Precipitation and soil moisture measurements for the 2007, 2008, 2009 season. The sites are established within the South Saskatchewan River Basin in an agricultural area southwest of Kenaston, Saskatchewan. Soil moisture measurements and precipitation were made in 24 selected quarter sections (800m x 800m) at the Kenaston site. A monitoring station is installed at the edge of each field where soil moisture at 0-5cm, 20cm and 50cm depths and the amount of rain are measured using hydra probe soil moisture sensors and tipping bucket rain gauges. The parameters read by the hydra probe are soil temperature, silt specific soil moisture, real dielectric constant and soil temperature corrected conductivity. A site specific soil moisture equation is used to calculate the soil moisture using the temperature corrected real dielectric constant.
A field study was undertaken to verify output from the modeling framework. The experimental design was undertaken to validate the 15 x 15 km model output for one pixel and permit an examination of water indicators at the sub-grid scale. The site is established within the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB) for verification of soil moisture, evaporative fluxes and snow water equivalent (SWE) as estimated by the MESH suite of hydrology-land surface models.

Dataset
Quality Control and Quality Assurance: verified soil moisture values are realistic: not to high (>50% depending on the soil type) or negative, verified that the precipitation gauges were not plugged, if so data filled with data from near by site, site is indicated on the data spreadsheet, verified that 5 cm soil moisture responds well to precipitation events, if not hydra probe is malfunctioning and verified that 50 cm soil moisture is not jumpy, soil salinity cause the values to be jumpy. Missing Data Gaps: Large Precipitation gaps are filled with nearby sites; the site is indicated on the data spreadsheet. Soil moisture data gaps less than or equal to 8 hours are filled using interpolation and color coded, see tables for larger gaps.

STEVENS HYDRA PROBE (for measuring soil moisture): Temperature (ºC)(+/- 0.6 Degrees Celsius(-10º to 36ºC)), Soil Moisture wfv (m3 m-3) (+/- 0.03 wfv (m3 m-3)/ +/- 0.003 wfv (m3 m-3)), Temperature corrected Electrical Conductivity (S/m) (+/- 0.0014 S/m or +/- 5%), Real/Imaginary Dielectric Constant (+/- 0.5 or +/- 1%) and Temperature corrected Real/Imaginary Dielectric Constant (+/- 0.5 or +/- 5%). TIPPING BUCKET RAINGUAGES: TB3 (for intensities from 25 to 500 mm/hr (+ 2 %) and TE525MM (up to 10 mm/hr ( +/- 1%), 10 to 20 mm/hr (+0, -3%), 20 to 30 mm/hr (+0, -5%))
